Aprilia’s 850cc MotoGP Engine: Ready to Push 2027 Rules? exclusive insight (2026)

Get ready for some exclusive insights into Aprilia's MotoGP journey! The future is here, and it's 850cc!

Aprilia's CEO, Massimo Rivola, has revealed that their new 850cc engine is performing exceptionally well on the test bench, leaving them "very happy" with the results. But here's where it gets controversial: while KTM has already showcased their 850cc engine on the track, Aprilia's debut remains a mystery. Rivola confirms, "The engine is ready, and it's running."

The 850cc bike is a work in progress, and Aprilia is taking its time to perfect it. With the revised 2027 MotoGP technical regulations on the horizon, they're not rushing into anything. "It's quite busy in Noale now," Rivola adds, referring to the company's headquarters.

Aprilia's recent success in MotoGP has set the stage for an exciting future. Marco Bezzecchi, their new signing, finished an impressive third in this year's standings, and the RS-GP dominated the final four grands prix with three wins. This success has fueled Aprilia's ambition to challenge for the title in 2026, creating a complex decision-making process regarding resource allocation between the current 1000cc bike and the upcoming 850cc prototype.

"We need to strategize and decide until when we push the '26 bike development," Rivola explains. "It's a delicate balance, and we have a plan, but it also depends on how the championship unfolds next year."

Technical director Fabiano Sterlacchini believes the main development crossover could occur around March or April of 2026, which will see a reduction in engine capacity, Pirelli taking over as the sole tire supplier, restricted aerodynamics, and the banning of ride-height devices.

And this is the part most people miss: Aprilia's first victory with Bezzecchi at Silverstone this year was a direct result of Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo retiring due to a ride-height failure. Rivola remains critical of these devices, calling them "stupid" and expressing his dislike for their continued presence in MotoGP.

With Peter's 20 years of experience in the paddock, he has witnessed the rise and fall of legends like Valentino Rossi and the challenges faced by Marc Marquez. Now, he's at the forefront of Suzuki's exit story and the complexities of MotoGP's technical regulations.

So, what do you think? Are you excited for Aprilia's 850cc journey? Do you agree with Rivola's criticism of ride-height devices? Let's discuss in the comments and share your thoughts on the future of MotoGP!
