A New Chapter for Francesco Bagnaia: Finding Happiness Again on the Track
After a challenging year, Francesco Bagnaia is back with a smile, testing Ducati's latest MotoGP bike in Valencia.
The two-time MotoGP champion, Francesco Bagnaia, kicked off his 2026 campaign with a fresh start and a new bike, the GP26. Despite a late crash that cut his test short, Bagnaia left Valencia with a positive outlook, feeling "happy" about the improvements made to his factory Ducati.
Completing 50 laps, Bagnaia finished the day in 10th place, just a fraction of a second behind Raul Fernandez on the Trackhouse Aprilia. While he was cautious about issuing a final verdict, given the unique characteristics of the Valencia track, Bagnaia was impressed by the new aerodynamic package he tested.
"I'm thrilled with the results so far," he said. "The new fairing looks promising, and the bike handled exceptionally well, especially during braking and entry. We still have some work to do, but I'm optimistic about the future."
But here's where it gets interesting: Bagnaia believes that the true potential of the GP26 can't be fully evaluated at Valencia. "This track is not ideal for extensive testing," he explained. "We need to try it out on faster, more open circuits to truly understand its capabilities."
And this is the part most people miss: Bagnaia's crash at Turn 2 during his time attack. He described it as a result of pushing the limits, an attempt to set a faster lap time. Despite the accident, he remained upbeat, emphasizing that it was a learning experience and an opportunity to improve.
"I'm not worried about the crash. It's all part of the process. I'm focused on the positive aspects and the potential of this bike."
Bagnaia's performance was two spots behind Nicolo Bulega, who was filling in for world champion Marc Marquez on the other Ducati. However, Bagnaia dismissed any concerns, stating that he was focused on his own progress and not bothered by comparisons.
"I'm not here to prove anything to anyone. I know my capabilities, and I'm confident in my team's work. We'll continue to push forward and aim for the top."
So, what's next for Bagnaia and Ducati? Will they find success with the GP26? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Bagnaia is determined to make his mark and bring Ducati back to the winner's circle.
