Get ready, DC fans! Season 2 of Creature Commandos is gearing up, and it's bringing a big gun: Captain Atom! Sources tell us this iconic hero is set to join the fray, making waves in the DC Universe's first animated project. But what does this mean for the future?
The details of Captain Atom's role are still under wraps, but we know he'll be a recurring character. The series will feature the Nathaniel Adam version of the hero, which debuted in 1987 in Captain Atom #1, crafted by Cary Bates and Pat Broderick. This iteration is a Vietnam War veteran with a fascinating backstory: after gaining his powers, he's catapulted into the future. Back in the present, he becomes a government-backed hero, his body encased in a metallic shell, wielding incredible nuclear abilities.
Captain Atom's history is rich, having graced screens in animated projects like Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. The casting for Creature Commandos could be a game-changer, potentially opening doors for a live-action debut – a first for the character!
Creature Commandos, a passion project of James Gunn, was greenlit by him and Peter Safran after they took the reins at DC Studios. While Gunn remains an executive producer, Dean Lorey (Harley Quinn) will be taking the lead as writer and showrunner for season 2. The series, which premiered on December 5, 2024, on HBO Max, has already captured audiences with its unique blend of action and humor.
The original team, comprised of Bride (Indira Varma), G.I. Robot and Weasel (both voiced by Sean Gunn), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), and Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), will be joined by Frankenstein (David Harbour), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and Anya Chalotra (Circe). Season 2 will also welcome King Shark, Nosferata, and Khalis to the team.
The series picks up after the events of Peacemaker Season 1, where Waller's schemes are exposed, leading to the dismantling of Task Force X. Her solution? Enlisting non-human inmates for black ops missions under ARGUS.
And this is the part most people miss... The introduction of Captain Atom could be a pivotal moment, potentially reshaping the landscape of the DC animated universe.
