A Star Who Never Forgot Where He Came From: Dharmendra’s Heartfelt Tribute to His Roots

His recent passing has brought to light a poignant gesture that underscores this connection: the gifting of his ancestral property, valued at Rs 50 million, to his nephew. Dharmendra’s ancestral village, Dangon, located a mere 25 kilometers from Ludhiana, held a special place in his heart. As recounted by his nephew, Buta Singh Deol, in an interview with The New Indian Express, Dharmendra visited the village in 2015–16 to hand over 19 kanal and three marla of land (equivalent to roughly 2.375 acres) to his father, Manjit Singh, and his late uncle, Shingara Singh. ‘Our family has been taking care of the land and tilling it since he left for Mumbai,’ Buta Singh shared. ‘He never forgot his roots or us.’ The property, including the house, is now estimated to be worth Rs 5 crore, a testament to both its sentimental and monetary value.
Controversially, some might question whether such a gesture is common among celebrities. While many stars invest in lavish properties or global ventures, Dharmendra’s choice to honor his rural heritage stands out as both rare and inspiring. Despite his hectic Bollywood schedule, Dharmendra made it a point to visit Dangon regularly, most notably in 2019 when he campaigned for his son, Sunny Deol, during the parliamentary elections in Gurdaspur. A few years ago, he personally traveled to the village to hand over the property, a symbolic act that bridged his dual worlds of stardom and simplicity.

Survived by six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Esha Deol, his personal life was as complex as it was rich. He married his first wife, Prakash Kaur, in 1954, with whom he had four children. In 1980, he married fellow actor Hema Malini, without divorcing his first wife, a decision that sparked both admiration and debate. His daughters, Esha and Ahana, were born to Hema.
In his final weeks, Dharmendra battled illness, spending time in the hospital before returning home to his family. His funeral and prayer meet were attended by a galaxy of Bollywood stars, a fitting farewell to a man who was as beloved off-screen as he was on it.
