Big news in the world of motorsports! The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global powerhouse overseeing motor sport and mobility organizations, has just announced a significant addition to its leadership team. Jean-Frédéric Thomas is set to become the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Jean-Frédéric's role officially begins on February 1, 2026. He'll be the financial guru, responsible for everything from financial governance and budgeting to risk management and long-term financial planning across the FIA's global operations. Think of him as the financial architect, building a solid foundation for the FIA's future.
He will report to General Manager, Alberto Villarreal, and will be based in the FIA's Geneva office. He brings over 25 years of experience in senior financial leadership roles from various international organizations.
Before joining the FIA, Jean-Frédéric was the Group CFO at the M3 Group in Geneva. Prior to that, he spent over 15 years at Cotecna, a global provider of testing, inspection, and certification services, eventually becoming Group CFO. He also gained experience in advisory and audit roles at PwC in Geneva and Luxembourg, and at Arthur Andersen/BearingPoint in Paris. He holds a Master/DESS in Finance and Banking from the University of Nice–Sophia Antipolis and a Master in Finance from EDHEC Business School.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed his excitement, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Jean-Frédéric to the FIA at a moment when we have restored strong financial stability after years of losses. His extensive financial leadership across large international organisations will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our governance and modernise our operations worldwide.”
Jean-Frédéric Thomas himself shared his enthusiasm: “I am honoured to be joining the FIA at a time of renewed financial strength and ambition. I look forward to contributing to its mission and helping to drive the next phase of its financial and operational development.”
Alberto Villarreal, General Manager at the FIA, added, “Jean-Frédéric will be a valuable asset to our senior leadership team, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. I look forward to working with him as we continue to drive our organisation-wide transformation at the FIA.”
But here's where it gets interesting... The FIA has faced financial challenges in the past. The appointment of Jean-Frédéric signals a clear focus on strengthening financial stability.
And this is the part most people miss... The success of the FIA hinges not only on its sporting events but also on its financial health. This appointment is a crucial step in ensuring the organization's long-term sustainability.
