Get ready for an epic showdown at the 2025 U.S. Open! The pre-scratch psych sheets are out, and boy, do we have a treat in store for swimming enthusiasts. The cream of the crop is gathering in Austin, Texas, for an unforgettable four-day competition.
From December 3rd to 6th, the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center will play host to an incredible lineup of swimmers, including eight individual world champions from the 2025 Worlds. The two biggest names in the sport, Leon Marchand and Summer McIntosh, will be joined by the highly anticipated return of superstar Caeleb Dressel, who hasn't raced since August.
It's an all-star cast, with top American pros leading the charge. The star-studded Texas pro group and University of Virginia post-grads will be joined by a strong contingent of NCAA swimmers and a sprinkle of international talent. But where's Katie Ledecky, you ask? The dominant force of recent U.S. Open meets is notably absent.
In the women's field, Summer McIntosh takes center stage. After withdrawing from the World Cup series in October due to illness, she's back and ready to contest the same five races as Marchand: the 400 free, 200 fly (both of which she's the reigning world champion in), 100 fly, 100 back, and 100 breast. She'll be joined by fellow world champions Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass, and Katharine Berkoff, each bringing their own unique strengths to the pool.
The men's field is equally stacked. Four reigning world champions will be in the mix, including Marchand's Texas training partners, Hubert Kos and Shaine Casas. They'll be joined by Tunisian Ahmed Jaouadi and South African Pieter Coetze. Marchand, fresh from his medley sweep at the 2025 Worlds, will race in some 'off' events for him, including the 400 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200 fly. It's an intriguing choice, especially considering he hasn't raced the 200 fly in long course since his Olympic gold in Paris.
Kos, riding high after setting SCM backstroke world records at the World Cup, has entered six events in Austin. He'll go head-to-head with Coetze in all three backstroke events, a highly anticipated showdown given their close finishes at the 2025 World Championships. Casas, training alongside Marchand and Kos at Texas, will also be in the mix for these backstroke events and the 200 IM.
The distance events promise to be thrilling, with world titlists Ahmed Jaouadi and Olympic champion Bobby Finke going head-to-head. Jaouadi, who dominated the 800 and 1500 free this past summer, is the top seed in both distances and will also swim the 200 and 400 free. Finke, meanwhile, will race the 400, 800, and 1500 free, plus the 400 IM. Joining them will be NCAA champion and American Record holder in the 500 free, Rex Maurer, and the NAG record-breaking Luka Mijatovic.
And let's not forget about Caeleb Dressel, the nine-time Olympic gold medalist. After a recent training base change, he's back and ready to contest the men's 50 free, 50 fly, and 100 fly. It's been a while since we've seen him race, so expectations are high.
The 50 and 100 fly events might see Ilya Kharun as the man to beat. The ASU junior has been on fire recently, and he'll be going head-to-head with his former teammate, Marchand, in the 200 fly. The 100 and 200 free events will also feature a majority of the 'A' final from the 2025 U.S. National Championships.
So, who's missing from this star-studded lineup? Katie Ledecky, the dominant force of recent U.S. Open meets, is notably absent. But here's where it gets controversial... Is her absence a strategic move, or is she taking a much-needed break? And what does this mean for the competition dynamics? These are questions swimming fans will be discussing leading up to the event.
As we count down the days to the 2025 U.S. Open, one thing is for sure: this competition is shaping up to be an unforgettable spectacle. With so many world-class swimmers in one place, it's a swimming fan's dream come true. Who do you think will emerge as the stars of this meet? And what unexpected storylines might unfold?
