Facing a critical shortage of skilled workers and stricter regulations, the logistics industry is undergoing a massive transformation. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has teamed up with Kirin Beverage Co., Ltd. and Kirin Group Logistics Co., Ltd. to revolutionize warehouse operations. This collaboration, culminating in a successful joint demonstration, showcases the future of cargo handling. Let's dive in!
This press release, dated November 13, 2025, highlights the completion of a joint demonstration aimed at automating warehouse processes and truck loading/unloading. The initiative addresses the pressing need for solutions to the operator shortage at logistics sites and the challenges brought about by the 2024 regulations designed to reduce truck drivers' working hours.
The demonstration, which kicked off in August 2024, took place at the LogiQ X Lab within Yokohama Hardtech Hub (YHH), MHI's co-creation space, as well as at Kirin Group Logistics' Nishi-Nagoya facility. MHI employed a cutting-edge, unmanned forklift, incorporating ΣSynX (Sigma Syncs) technology – part of their "Smart Connections" solutions. This technology enables flexible autonomous operation and safe human-machine coordination. The tests focused on optimizing load assortment, adapting operational routes based on placement changes, and implementing highly efficient storage methods.
But here's where it gets controversial... the automation of logistics work, which traditionally relied on the expertise of human operators. MHI has broken down these tasks into three key areas: picking, inbound and outbound processes, and truck loading/unloading. The goal is to progressively integrate ΣSynX for automation and intelligence across these areas. An automated picking solution was already put into operation in December 2024 at Kirin Group's Ebina Logistics Center.
And this is the part most people miss... The successful joint demonstration has allowed MHI to establish the processes for future automation of the entire cargo handling process, including unloading, warehouse handling, and loading. MHI is now focused on enhancing the scalability of its "Smart Connections" solutions across all logistics and warehouse operations.
Looking ahead, MHI plans to continue developing "Smart Connections" solutions to tackle industry-wide issues, including the shortage of logistics operators, improving working conditions, and addressing the impact of regulatory changes.
