Bagnaia's crash at Portimao, while running in fourth place, was a result of his aggressive pursuit to close the gap to third-placed Pedro Acosta. Despite the disappointment of a DNF, Bagnaia maintains that it was a "better weekend" overall in terms of his performance and feeling on the GP25.
"I was giving it my all to secure fourth position," he explained. "I knew it was a tough ask, as they were faster than me, but I was determined to make up ground. Unfortunately, I pushed too hard and crashed. It's a risk we take, but I'd rather go down fighting than not try at all."
When asked if crashing while pushing for a top result was a positive, Bagnaia agreed, noting that it was a vast improvement over his previous falls from outside the top 10 in Australia and Indonesia. "At least I was in the mix this time," he said. "It's a step in the right direction, even if the result is the same."
And this is the part most people miss: Bagnaia's crash had significant implications for the battle for third place in the standings. Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi took the grand prix win, leaving Bagnaia with just two points from the Portimao weekend. He now trails Bezzecchi by 35 points and is only three ahead of Acosta.
