Sony and Honda's Afeela 1: The Ultimate EV Gaming Experience (2026)

Imagine merging your love for video games with the thrill of driving – that's exactly what Sony and Honda aim to achieve with their innovative electric vehicle, the Afeela 1. This groundbreaking sedan is designed to cater to those who believe that long journeys should be filled with entertainment, featuring a unique integration that makes it feel like a mobile PlayStation lounge.

Set to launch next year, the Afeela 1 is priced starting at an estimated US$89,900 (approximately NZ$150,000 before local taxes). What sets this vehicle apart from the competition is its capability to stream PlayStation games directly within the car, a feature not currently available in any other vehicle.

Your Car as a Gaming Console

At the heart of the Afeela 1's appeal is its support for PlayStation Remote Play. This allows drivers and passengers to enjoy popular games like Gran Turismo right on the car’s expansive central display or on screens positioned behind the front seats. Gamers can use a standard PlayStation controller or the vehicle’s touchscreen for navigation, as long as they have a decent internet connection. A minimum download speed of 5Mbps is necessary, though 15Mbps is ideal for a seamless gaming experience.

Izumi Kawanishi, the president and COO of Sony Honda Mobility, expressed the ambition behind this technology: "The introduction of PS Remote Play embodies Afeela's vision for mobility: transforming the traveling space into a captivating and emotional one. Through this integration, we are elevating the customer’s entire travel experience to an unprecedented level of entertainment." While this feature is primarily designed for passengers, it underscores Sony's commitment to transforming vehicles into entertainment hubs.

Impressive Performance Meets Cutting-Edge Technology

Of course, the Afeela 1 is not just about fun and games; it is built to perform as a reliable electric vehicle. The car is equipped with a 91kWh battery that powers a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system producing up to 360kW. This positions the Afeela 1 in the high-end segment of the EV market, although details like acceleration times are yet to be revealed.

For customers seeking even more features, the fully loaded version will be available for around US$102,900. The Afeela 1 also embraces a modern take on vehicle tech with a digital license plate provided by Reviver, highlighting its "software-defined vehicle" philosophy, where even traditional components evolve into updatable interfaces.

Sales of the Afeela 1 are set to kick off next year in California, with plans for broader availability still under wraps. It remains to be seen whether this innovative vehicle captures the hearts of consumers or becomes a niche offering in the competitive automotive landscape.
