Tanzania and Zambia strengthen cargo transport cooperation as new equipment debuts
Dar es Salaam — Deputy Minister of Transport David Kihenzile unveiled a new reach stacker for Zambian firm Zambia Cargo and Logistics Limited (ZCL) at Mukuba Depot in Dar es Salaam, marking a significant milestone in deepening Tanzania–Zambia collaboration in the transport sector.
In his remarks, Kihenzile lauded ZCL for boosting cargo handling from 15,649 containers in 2021 to more than 40,000 containers in 2025. He described this growth as a testament to efficiency and to substantial investments in the infrastructure of the Port of Dar es Salaam, which underpin regional trade.
The Deputy Minister reiterated Tanzania’s ongoing commitment to developing port, rail, road, and border infrastructure to facilitate smoother regional commerce. Key projects include the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) initiative, upgrades to the Dar es Salaam Port, and the expansion of Mtwara Port.
He also called on Zambia to accelerate the opening of the Nakonde One Stop Border Post, aimed at easing vehicle congestion in the Tunduma–Nakonde corridor.
The ceremony was attended by Sylvester Kanyika, who represented the Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC). He emphasized that the investment will make Zambia’s cargo movement via Dar es Salaam more reliable and secure.
Kanyika added that TASAC will maintain close collaboration with stakeholders in the maritime sector to ensure compliance with legal frameworks, maritime safety standards, and service quality.
