Man Utd warn Roma at City, says Guardiola
Pep Guardiola insists Manchester United’s prolific form means Manchester City still can’t take Premier League glory for granted.
City need a maximum of five points to win their third title in four seasons and Guardiola’s side could finish the job if they win at Crystal Palace on Saturday and second-placed United lose at home to rivals and champions in title, Liverpool a day later.
The city manager believes it would be foolish to be distracted by the looming finish line, especially in light of United’s 6-2 Europa League demolition on Thursday.
“Let me try to beat Crystal Palace. Don’t ask me how I’m going to feel [if I win the title] because I didn’t experience it, it didn’t happen, ”he said at a pre-match press conference.
“I know you are anticipating it, but the reality is that yesterday we saw another example of what a contender we are playing. United are an amazing team who have come in the past two months in their best form of the season.
“We need five points to be champions and tomorrow we have an incredible opportunity to take this step.
“If we win this game, we’ll think about what happens. Just in case that happens, you can ask me about my feelings. But I can’t explain my feelings in the future because I won’t. haven’t lived. “
Since a two-game winning streak in eight Premier League matches from late January to early March – a prolonged recession that has seen City stand out, United have been in compelling form.
A 2-0 derby victory over City began a streak of top-flight five-game winning streak, verified by last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Leeds United.
Leeds have recently beaten a high-rotation City side, which Guardiola is expected to repeat with a fully-fit squad and their Champions semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon.
City moved from behind to win 2-1 in the French capital midweek, helped by some tactical mid-time adjustments from their manager.
However, Guardiola once again insisted that the credit should go to his players – acknowledging relatively little upset in the squad in recent years as a virtue when negotiating this season’s compact schedule.
“In our time together, these five seasons, we’re almost the same guys that the first Premier League we won,” he said.
“I have said many times that all the managers of the best clubs when you play every three days, we don’t train. I’m a manager but I don’t feel that on the pitch we can develop. because we have time.
“The only reason is the quality of the players we have, who can understand what we’re looking for and change some ideas immediately because they’re smart.
“There are no more secrets. In one season you can be successful, win something important, but to be consistent over the years, there is only one secret – to have quality players. Do not sell it on any other aspect than that.
“When you have a team like this, you can keep it going longer.”
Even so, Guardiola believes fatigue could be a factor for a sixth straight game on the road – including visits to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-finals and the EFL Cup final over the past two weeks. ends – against an opponent who previously turned out to be a tricky proposition.
“It’s a lot of travel, a lot of travel, we’re tired in a lot of ways,” he added.
“The reality is Crystal Palace, a team of Roy Hodgson. Every time we’ve faced them we’ve had a lot of problems winning the game.”
